Danzantes del Alma de UC Davis
General Information

Danzantes del Alma Annual Show 2008 : April 5, Saturday

Who we are

Danzantes del Alma is the highly acclaimed folklórico dance troupe that has served UC Davis and northern California since 1977. Presenting a diverse repertoire from the many regions of Mexico, these volunteer student dancers from all academic majors share a common desire to celebrate Mexican and Latino culture through dance. They are proud to carry on the tradition established by the students who came before them, and wish to ensure that the expression of their culture will endure for future generations. The 30-member troupe operates under the guidance and instruction of Artistic Director Gloria Rodriguez and a 15-member student board. The students volunteer over 10 hours each week for practice throughout the year, with additional time devoted to performances, fundraising and other troupe activities.

What we do

The popularity of Danzantes has resulted in invitations to perform throughout California. Each year, Danzantes reaches audiences of over 9,000 people at campus and community events. One of the troupe's highest priorities is to visit schools throughout Yolo, Solano and Sacramento counties to share the cultural heritage of Mexico and to encourage educationally disadvantaged children to pursue a higher education. Members seek to inspire students to strive for a college education by serving as role models, and to promote confidence and self-esteem by encouraging them to feel proud of their heritage. Danzantes also presents a Youth Dance Workshop for regional children in grades K-12 each year and an annual show each spring.

How the campus and community benefit

The troupe has become one of the University's most important programs for promoting outreach and retention, nurturing an inclusive and welcoming campus climate, and helping students develop leadership, teamwork and responsibility. It serves as an important visible symbol that this culture is alive, well and belongs at the heart of University life. Without Danzantes, the critical presence it brings to major annual campus events such as Picnic Day, the Activities Faire, Diversity Days, La Raza Cultural Days and Tardeada and Chicano/Latino Graduation Celebration would be lost. Likewise, Danzantes has been a much sought after component of multicultural education and celebration in area schools and community events. Its members serve as powerful examples of how students can achieve academic success in spite of numerous obstacles.

Membership

Membership is open to currently enrolled UC Davis students. Previous dance experience is not necessary. Practices are held on Monday and Thursday evenings and on Saturdays. Beginners classes are held one hour before each practice. Membership dues are $10 per quarter, and members are required to provide their own folklórico shoes. Students interested in joining should attend the Fall Welcome Orientation held in early October (contact SPAC at 752-2027 for the specific time and location), or contact the Danzantes Student Manager at 752-2025.
