APCW: April 21 - 25, 2008
This year will mark the 35th annual Asian Pacific Culture Week (APCW) at the University of California, Davis from April 21st-25th. Since its inception in 1973, APCW has been providing the UC Davis campus and members of local communities, ranging from Yolo County to the Bay Area, with cultural programs that foster awareness and understanding of the Asian Pacific American culture and experiences through communication, education, and self-affirmation.
General Information
Featuring cultural programs designed to both educate and celebrate, APCW became a University sponsored program in 1979 and has grown into an annual event anticipated by students, faculty, staff, and members of the Davis community alike. The activities begin on Monday with "Kickoff on the Quad" a noontime celebration featuring music, dance, food, games, and student organization booths. The week continues with presentations by speakers from diverse corners of the Asian Pacific Islander community. In the past, musicians, comedians, actors, authors, artists, and civil rights activists have visited the campus to share their experiences and talents. As part of the restructuring of APCW, Arts and Lecture series events which were formerly concentrated during the week will now be spread throughout the year. Look for more information regarding these programs and more in the coming months.
Providing the climactic finale at the end of the week is Culture Night, the annual talent showcase featuring student, local, and professional groups. Combining traditional and contemporary styles, the performances reflect the changing face of Asian American culture. Past performers have included members of Mga Kapatid (MK), Na Keiki O Hawaii (Hawaiian Club), the Davis Chinese School, as well as professionals such as comedian Rex Navarrete and pop group Kai.
None of these events would be possible without the hard work and dedication of the APCW planning committee. Its members are responsible for recruiting and negotiating with speakers and performers, reserving venues for the programs, publicizing APCW events, and raising money to fund them. The committee is broken down into six subcommittees: Arts and Lecture, Kickoff, Culture Night, Finance/Fundraising, Logistics, and Publicity. APCW also has a sister organization in the Asian Pacific Islander Leadership Program, or APILP (formerly the API Leadership Conference, or APILC).
